‘Literature is hard.  It is a complex web of symbolism, analogy, plot, character, journey, language, experience, context and writers’ angst.  Readers must have a key to unlock all of this, but the unequal and shifting nature of our society means that a significant number of students do not possess that key.’

Jennifer Webb, How to Teach English Literature: Overcoming Cultural Poverty

‘The limits of my language mean the limits of my world’

Ludwig Wittgenstein

In order to address this, it is the intent of the English Department at Winterton Community Academy to provide students with access to a wide range of texts across Year 7 to Year 9 to equip them with the skills needed to access the course material of challenging Language and Literature exams in Year 10 and 11.

It is the intention of the department that students will be given opportunities to practise the reading, writing and spoken language skills upon entry to the academy.  Schemes of work have been created to create opportunities for students to study inspiring texts – both modern day and classics in addition to a number of Shakespeare texts.  The curriculum that has been created addresses both fiction and non-fiction texts and all students will have access to these.

Through their library lessons, students will be encouraged to develop a love of reading and cultivate a strong and rich knowledge of vocabulary to prepare them for life beyond the academy.  We aim to differentiate materials so that no students are unable to access the curriculum that we have created.  It is the intention that no student will be disadvantaged regardless of their cultural capital.  The schemes of work at KS3 have been designed to cover all aspects of the English Language and Literature GCSE courses in order to ensure the transition to KS4 is seamless and efficient.
