Therefore, in order to support this and help to create a love of reading, pupils in Key Stage 3 at Winterton Community Academy will all have the opportunity to engage with ‘Reading Plus’.
The adaptive online reading programme helps students to develop the essential fluency skills for proficient and confident reading.
It’s an exciting journey to enhance literacy skills and foster a love for reading among our students. Packed with various engaging texts, Reading Plus offers tailored challenges to cater to students’ diverse reading abilities. The programme will be used in school and can also be accessed from home via various devices (laptop, computer, tablet).
What is Reading Plus?
Reading Plus is a research-based online reading development programme that improves students’ reading fluency, stamina, and comprehension.
Used in over 1,400 schools in the UK, Reading Plus is an exciting part of children’s reading journey.
How does Reading Plus work?
After completing an initial assessment, Reading Plus places each student at their correct reading level on the programme. Students can then select texts of different genres and types (fiction, non-fiction, informational) suited to their reading ability. After reading a text, students are asked ten comprehension questions. Text selections and questions adapt to reading levels as the students progress through the programme. Weekly assignments are set with personalised instructions for students, including visual skills development for eye-tracking, reading tasks for comprehension and fluency, and vocabulary tasks.
Reading Plus supports and enhances the ability of all young people to read, focusing on three main developmental areas:
- Fluency – the ability to read smoothly and at an appropriate speed
- Vocabulary – the recognition of words and ability to understand what they mean
- Comprehension – demonstrating an understanding of the text
As a consequence of development in these three key disciplines. there will be greater motivation and subsequent reading proficiency. A reluctance changes to engagement and enjoyment to a love a reading.
All pupils in Key Stage 3 have one lesson per week, where they have the opportunity to read through Reading Plus. Every time they do, their reading proficiency will be positively affected.
Reading is an essential element of the curriculum and is planned for within each subject’s curriculum. However, in order for your child to obtain the greatest progress, we would encourage the use of Reading Plus at home. This would enable you to support them and discuss what they have read. Talking about a story will strengthen the comprehension.
